Travel Advice (Foreign Commonwealth Office)

Travel Advice From Foreign Commonwealth Office

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office’s (FCO) Travel Advice Notices aim to ensure that British travellers are wellprepared before departure. Their website also contains background information on how they decide what advice to give and answers frequently asked questions (FAQs) on Travel Advice.

FCO Travel Advice is designed to try to safeguard the British traveller; the advice put out by other governments is for their nationals. The British Government shares certain intelligence with key allies and seeks to co-ordinate its travel advice with others where this is appropriate. But this does not mean that travel advice for British nationals will always be the same as that for other nationals. Circumstances may vary for different nationalities. Nationals of other countries should therefore consult their own government's web site.

What is the purpose of FCO Travel Advice?

FCO Travel Advice is designed to help British travellers make their own decisions, on an informed basis, about travelling abroad, and to help them to avoid trouble by providing information on threats to personal safety arising from political unrest, terrorist activities, lawlessness, violence, natural disasters, epidemics, anti-British demonstrations and aircraft/shipping safety. While every care is taken in preparing FCO Travel Advice, the FCO do not assume any legal responsibility to those who read the Travel Advice and who may choose to take it into account when making any decisions relating to a particular country.

How often is the advice changed?

It is reviewed monthly and updated following any significant incident that might impact on British nationals travelling, or living, overseas. At a minimum, it is revised and re-issued every 3 months. In a developing crisis, the advice can be updated much more regularly, sometimes several times a day, as more information becomes available.

What other information tips and advice do you give to Britons travelling overseas?

In short we advise travellers to:

  • Check the FCO Travel Advice before they book flights/holidays and subscribe to free email alerts to keep up-to-date.
  • Take out adequate travel/medical insurance.
  • Check on any health/medical requirements.
  • Make sure they have sufficient funds and keep what they have safe.
  • Check their passports are valid (e.g. some countries require 6 months validity on departure).
  • Obtain any necessary visas.
  • Avoid any involvement with drugs.
  • Respect the laws and customs of other countries.
  • heck what vaccinations you need at least 6 weeks before you go and consider whether you need to take extra health precautions.
